Some verbs require an object followed by an adjective, noun phrase, infinitive or other complement. Learn the pattern with the verb.
After tell or ask, an object can be followed by a to-infinitive. Make in an active causative pattern takes an object and a base verb, without to. Other verbs take adjective complements, so learn complete patterns rather than one universal formula.
