A main verb contributes the central event or state. Auxiliary be, have and do build progressive, perfect, passive, question and negative structures.
In a verb group, identify the main action separately from the auxiliaries. Have marks perfect aspect; be builds continuous or passive forms; do helps form many questions and negatives. A phrasal verb remains the main lexical verb even when an auxiliary comes before it.
