Past perfect continuous foregrounds an activity extending up to a past point, often to explain duration or a later past result.
Use had been + -ing when the duration of an earlier activity explains a later past situation. Contrast the process with a completed total: had been cleaning highlights the work; had cleaned three rooms highlights the result.
