Perfect simple often foregrounds completion, quantity or a state; perfect continuous foregrounds activity, duration or recent evidence. Some contexts allow both.
Use the simple perfect to highlight a completed result, quantity or state. Use the continuous perfect to highlight the activity and its duration. With verbs such as live or work, both may be possible with different emphasis.
