A pronoun must have a clear referent. Singular they is widely used when gender is unknown, irrelevant or the person’s chosen usage.
A pronoun should point clearly to a person or thing already introduced. If two names could be the antecedent, repeat the intended name. Singular they keeps the usual they verb forms: they are, not they is, even when it refers to one person.
