A and an – Malayalam Notes

Learn a and an with English and Malayalam notes, natural examples, phrasal verbs and practice answers.

LESSON 027 · ARTICLES AND DETERMINERS

Understanding the topic · English notes

Use a or an with a singular countable noun when introducing one non-specific member. The next sound determines the choice.

Listen to the first sound of the next word, not just its first letter. An hour begins with a vowel sound because h is silent; a university begins with a consonant /y/ sound. A/an cannot normally stand directly before an uncountable noun or a plural noun.

അടുത്ത വാക്കിന്റെ ആദ്യ ശബ്ദം നോക്കിയാണ് a അല്ലെങ്കിൽ an തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നത്.

അടുത്ത വാക്കിന്റെ ആദ്യ ശബ്ദം നോക്കുക. Hour-ൽ h ഉച്ചരിക്കുന്നില്ല; അതിനാൽ an hour. University-യുടെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ യ് ശബ്ദമായതിനാൽ a university. Plural, uncountable nouns-ന് നേരിട്ട് a/an ചേർക്കരുത്.

Sentence pattern · പ്രയോഗരീതി

a + consonant sound; an + vowel sound

Remember: A university and an hour depend on sounds, not initial letters.

Why this pattern works

Listen to the first sound of the next word, not just its first letter. An hour begins with a vowel sound because h is silent; a university begins with a consonant /y/ sound. A/an cannot normally stand directly before an uncountable noun or a plural noun.

അടുത്ത വാക്കിന്റെ ആദ്യ ശബ്ദം നോക്കുക. Hour-ൽ h ഉച്ചരിക്കുന്നില്ല; അതിനാൽ an hour. University-യുടെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ യ് ശബ്ദമായതിനാൽ a university. Plural, uncountable nouns-ന് നേരിട്ട് a/an ചേർക്കരുത്.

Choose a or an by sound

Use a before a consonant sound: a book, a university, a useful idea. Use an before a vowel sound: an apple, an hour, an honest answer. The first sound matters, not just the first written letter.

ആദ്യത്തെ അക്ഷരം മാത്രം നോക്കരുത്; ഉച്ചാരണത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ശബ്ദമാണ് പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടത്. University തുടങ്ങുന്നത് “യു” ശബ്ദത്തിലായതിനാൽ a university. Hour-ൽ h ഉച്ചരിക്കാത്തതിനാൽ an hour.

When a/an is not suitable

A/an normally comes before a singular countable noun. Say a suggestion but some advice; a chair but some furniture. Say “She is a teacher,” including the article before the singular job noun.

ഒറ്റവചനത്തിൽ എണ്ണിക്കണക്കാക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്ന noun-കൾക്കുമുമ്പിലാണ് സാധാരണ a/an ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. Advice, furniture പോലുള്ള uncountable noun-കൾക്കുമുമ്പിൽ a/an ഉപയോഗിക്കരുത്.
