A complex preposition contains several words functioning together, such as because of or in front of. Its complement is normally a noun phrase or -ing form.
A complex preposition acts as one unit even though it contains several words. Because of takes a noun phrase, unlike because followed by a clause. In spite of can take a noun or -ing form; do not add an extra of after despite.
