Passives with two objects – Malayalam Notes

Learn passives with two objects with English and Malayalam notes, natural examples, phrasal verbs and practice answers.

LESSON 171 · PASSIVE AND CAUSATIVE STRUCTURES

Understanding the topic · English notes

Some two-object verbs allow either object to become the passive subject. With other verbs, a preposition is needed for the person complement.

With give and some similar verbs, either the person or thing can become the passive subject. The other participant remains as an object or preposition phrase. Not every two-complement verb permits both passive patterns, so learn the verb's actual construction.

രണ്ട് object ഉള്ള verb-ൽ ഏത് object subject ആക്കാമെന്ന് pattern നോക്കണം.

Give പോലുള്ള ചില verbs-ൽ ആൾക്കും വസ്തുവിനും passive subject ആകാം. മറ്റേ ഭാഗം object അല്ലെങ്കിൽ preposition phrase ആയി തുടരും. എല്ലാ verbs-നും രണ്ട് pattern അനുവദിക്കണമെന്നില്ല.

Sentence pattern · പ്രയോഗരീതി

They gave me a book → I was given a book.

Remember: Explain does not normally allow I was explained the rule; use the rule was explained to me.

Why this pattern works

With give and some similar verbs, either the person or thing can become the passive subject. The other participant remains as an object or preposition phrase. Not every two-complement verb permits both passive patterns, so learn the verb's actual construction.
