LESSON 167 · PASSIVE AND CAUSATIVE STRUCTURES
Understanding the topic · English notes
Passive voice makes the affected participant the subject. Use the appropriate form of be plus past participle; a by-phrase can identify the agent.
In the passive, the receiver of an action becomes the subject. Keep the appropriate form of be and the main verb's past participle. Mention the agent with by only when useful; many passive sentences naturally omit it.

Why this pattern works
In the passive, the receiver of an action becomes the subject. Keep the appropriate form of be and the main verb's past participle. Mention the agent with by only when useful; many passive sentences naturally omit it.
പ്രവർത്തനം ലഭിക്കുന്നയാളെ subject ആക്കി be + past participle ഉപയോഗിക്കുക. ആരാണ് ചെയ്തത് എന്ന് ആവശ്യമായാൽ by കൊണ്ട് പറയാം. പ്രവർത്തകൻ വ്യക്തമല്ലെങ്കിൽ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പ്രധാനമല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒഴിവാക്കാം.
How to change an active sentence into passive voice
Active: The team called off the meeting. Passive: The meeting was called off by the team. The active object becomes the passive subject. Use the appropriate form of be followed by the past participle, and keep the particle in called off.
Active വാക്യത്തിലെ object passive വാക്യത്തിലെ subject ആകുന്നു. Tense-ന് അനുയോജ്യമായ be രൂപവും past participle-ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കുക. Called off പോലുള്ള phrasal verb-ൽ off ഒഴിവാക്കരുത്.
Keep the tense and meaning
- Present: They clean the room. → The room is cleaned.
- Past: They cleaned the room. → The room was cleaned.
- Modal: They must clean the room. → The room must be cleaned.
The person doing the action can be omitted when unknown or unimportant: “My bag was stolen.” Do not force verbs without an object into a passive form: “She arrived” does not become “She was arrived.”
പ്രവൃത്തി ചെയ്തത് ആരെന്ന് അറിയില്ലെങ്കിലോ അത് പ്രധാനമല്ലെങ്കിലോ by ഉപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള ഭാഗം ഒഴിവാക്കാം. Object ഇല്ലാത്ത arrive പോലുള്ള verb-കൾക്ക് ഇങ്ങനെ passive രൂപം ഉണ്ടാക്കാനാകില്ല.
