An absolute construction has its own expressed subject. A dangling modifier accidentally attaches to the wrong or missing main-clause subject and needs revision.
An absolute construction supplies its own subject, as in the work finished. An ordinary opening participle clause instead normally shares the main subject. If the actor is missing or mismatched, rewrite with a full clause rather than leaving the reader to guess.
