Reduced relative clauses – Malayalam Notes

Learn reduced relative clauses with English and Malayalam notes, natural examples, phrasal verbs and practice answers.

LESSON 165 · INFINITIVES, GERUNDS AND PARTICIPLES

Understanding the topic · English notes

Relative clauses can often be reduced to participle phrases when their meaning and reference remain clear. Active and passive reductions use different forms.

A relative clause can sometimes become a participle phrase: people who are waiting becomes people waiting. Active reductions often use -ing; passive reductions often use a past participle. Do not reduce a clause if important time or modal meaning would be lost.

Relative clause ചുരുക്കുമ്പോൾ active, passive ബന്ധം നിലനിർത്തണം.

People who are waiting എന്നത് people waiting ആയി ചുരുക്കാം. Active-ൽ ing, passive-ൽ past participle സാധാരണമാണ്. സമയമോ സാധ്യതയോ നഷ്ടമാകുന്നിടത്ത് clause യാന്ത്രികമായി ചുരുക്കരുത്.

Sentence pattern · പ്രയോഗരീതി

students who are waiting → students waiting

Remember: Not every relative clause can be shortened without changing meaning.
