An -ing clause can function like a noun phrase as subject, object or complement. It can still take its own objects and adverbials.
An -ing clause can be a subject or a complement after a verb, yet it retains verbal features such as an object. One activity used as subject usually takes singular agreement. Do not confuse every -ing form with a progressive verb phrase.
