LESSON 148 · CLAUSES
Understanding the topic · English notes
A defining relative clause identifies the referent and is not normally separated by commas. Its information is needed to know which person or thing is meant.
A defining relative identifies which person or thing is meant, so do not separate it with commas. Use who for people and which/that for things as appropriate. An object relative pronoun can often be omitted; a subject relative normally cannot.
