Learn need and dare as modal and main verbs with English and Malayalam notes, natural examples, phrasal verbs and practice answers.

LESSON 101 · MODALS AND RELATED EXPRESSIONS

Understanding the topic · English notes

Need and dare can behave as ordinary verbs or, in restricted formal uses, like modals. Negatives and questions reveal the difference.

Ordinary need and dare use do-support and may take to-infinitives. Modal need appears especially in needn't and formal questions; modal dare appears in expressions such as dare not. Do not mix the two patterns halfway through a clause.
