Past continuous presents an action in progress at a past time. It often supplies background while another event interrupts or overlaps it.
Use was/were + -ing for an action already in progress at a past reference time. Past simple can then introduce a shorter event within that background. Two past continuous clauses can describe simultaneous ongoing actions.

കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒരു സമയത്ത് നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന കാര്യത്തിന് was/were + ing. അതിനിടയിൽ ഉണ്ടായ സംഭവം past simple-ൽ പറയാം. While ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഒരേസമയം നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന രണ്ട് പ്രവർത്തനവും ചേർക്കാം.
