Shopping list തയ്യാറാക്കുമ്പോൾ “some rice” എന്നും “some apples” എന്നും പറയാം. പക്ഷേ quantity ചോദിക്കുമ്പോൾ “How much rice?” എന്നും “How many apples?” എന്നും മാറും. ചില വാക്കുകൾ noun ന്റെ countability അനുസരിച്ചും ചിലത് question ആണോ offer ആണോ എന്ന context അനുസരിച്ചുമാണ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കേണ്ടത്.
Some: ഒരു കൃത്യമല്ലാത്ത അളവ് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ എണ്ണം
“I bought some apples.” — ഞാൻ കുറച്ച് apples വാങ്ങി. “We need some rice.” — നമുക്ക് കുറച്ച് അരി വേണം. Some plural countable nouns നൊപ്പവും uncountable nouns നൊപ്പവും വരാം. എത്ര എണ്ണം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ എത്ര അളവ് എന്ന് ഇവിടെ കൃത്യമായി പറഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല.
“I have some questions” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ ചില questions ഉണ്ട് എന്നാണ്. “I need some help” സഹായം വേണം എന്നാണ്. Help ഈ meaning ൽ uncountable ആയതിനാൽ “some helps” എന്ന് മാറ്റരുത്.
Any: സാധാരണ questions ഉം negatives ഉം
“Do you have any questions?” — നിങ്ങൾക്ക് എന്തെങ്കിലും questions ഉണ്ടോ? “Is there any milk in the fridge?” — fridge ൽ പാൽ എന്തെങ്കിലും ഉണ്ടോ? “We don’t have any bread.” — നമ്മുടെ കൈയിൽ bread ഒന്നുമില്ല. “I didn’t receive any messages.” — എനിക്ക് messages ഒന്നും ലഭിച്ചില്ല.
Positive statements ൽ any ഉപയോഗിക്കാം: “You can choose any seat.” — ഏത് seat വേണമെങ്കിലും തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാം. ഇവിടെ any എന്നത് free choice ആണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് any negative sentences ൽ മാത്രം വരും എന്ന് ഓർക്കരുത്.
Offers ഉം requests ഉം: some വരാം
“Would you like some tea?” — കുറച്ച് ചായ വേണമോ? “Could I have some water, please?” — കുറച്ച് വെള്ളം തരാമോ? Questions ആണെങ്കിലും some സ്വാഭാവികമാണ്; offer അല്ലെങ്കിൽ request ആണ്. “Question കണ്ടാൽ any മാത്രം” എന്ന rule ഈ examples ൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കില്ല.
“Did you buy some bread?” എന്ന് ചോദിക്കുമ്പോൾ bread വാങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്ന context ഉണ്ടാകാം. “Did you buy any bread?” എന്നത് bread വാങ്ങിയോ എന്ന തുറന്ന enquiry ആകാം. Speaker ന്റെ expectation ഉം meaning ഉം choice നെ ബാധിക്കും.
Many: എണ്ണാവുന്ന plural nouns
“How many students are in the class?” — class ൽ എത്ര students ഉണ്ട്? “I don’t have many books.” — എനിക്ക് അധികം books ഇല്ല. Students, books, messages എന്നിവ എണ്ണാവുന്നവയാണ്. Many ന് ശേഷം ഈ meaning ൽ plural form ഉപയോഗിക്കൂ: many books; many book എന്നല്ല.
Much: uncountable nouns
“How much time do we have?” — നമുക്ക് എത്ര സമയം ഉണ്ട്? “I don’t have much money with me.” — എന്റെ കൈയിൽ അധികം പണമില്ല. Money നോട്ടുകളായി എണ്ണാൻ കഴിയുമെങ്കിലും English ൽ money ഈ usage ൽ uncountable ആണ്. അതിനാൽ how much money; how many money എന്നല്ല.
“How much does this cost?” price ചോദിക്കുന്ന സാധാരണ question ആണ്. “How many bottles do you need?” bottles ന്റെ എണ്ണം ചോദിക്കുന്നു. Noun നെ മലയാളത്തിൽ എങ്ങനെ കാണുന്നു എന്നതിനെക്കാൾ English usage നോക്കുക.
Everyday positive sentences ൽ a lot of
“We have a lot of work today.” “She has a lot of friends.” Informal conversation ൽ much/many ന് പകരം a lot of പല positive sentences ലും സ്വാഭാവികമാണ്. Many positive sentences ൽ തെറ്റല്ല: “Many people work from home.” “Much” ഉം much better പോലുള്ള മറ്റ് patterns ൽ സാധാരണമാണ്.
