A simple sentence has one main clause. A compound sentence coordinates main clauses; a complex sentence contains at least one subordinate clause.
Count clauses rather than verbs alone. Two actions with a shared subject can still form one simple clause. Coordinated independent clauses form a compound sentence; a dependent clause introduced by because or when makes a complex structure.
