When reporting a continuing or mixed-time message, choose each verb according to its own time relationship and the reporter’s viewpoint. Clear reporting does not require uniform tense changes.
A report can contain past, present and future references together. Choose each tense according to the reported event and the reporter's viewpoint. Introduce the speaker clearly and repeat the name when a pronoun could refer to someone else.
