Present and past participles – Malayalam Notes

Learn present and past participles with English and Malayalam notes, natural examples, phrasal verbs and practice answers.

LESSON 163 · INFINITIVES, GERUNDS AND PARTICIPLES

Understanding the topic · English notes

Present participles often express active ongoing relations; past participles often express passive or completed relations. Their interpretation depends on the verb and construction.

An -ing participle often describes an active participant; a past participle often describes something affected by an action. A participle alone is not a finite verb. The exact meaning depends on the verb, since some past participles describe completed changes rather than passives.
