Understanding the topic · English notes
A phrase is a word or group functioning as a unit. Its head determines its type and its dependents add detail.
A noun phrase can be a subject or object; a preposition phrase often adds place or time. Identify the head word before naming the phrase. A phrase can sit inside a larger phrase, and a phrasal verb is not the same thing as every phrase that contains a verb.
