A direct object is affected by a transitive verb. An indirect object commonly identifies a recipient before the direct object.
Ask what was given, sent or shown to find the direct object; ask who received it to find the indirect object. Not every verb accepts two objects. In hand someone something, the person is the indirect object, whereas in pick something up there is just one direct object.
