Polite requests often use modal questions, past forms for distance, or would you mind + -ing. The appropriate wording depends on relationship and situation.
Could you and would you often soften a request. Would you mind takes -ing, while I was wondering if… uses past wording for polite distance. Tone and relationship still matter; a long sentence is not automatically more polite.
