LESSON 219 · WORD FORMATION AND MULTIWORD VERBS

Understanding the topic · English notes

With separable transitive phrasal verbs, a noun object may occur before or after the particle, but a pronoun normally comes between them. Inseparable verbs keep their pattern.

With a separable transitive particle verb, a noun object can often go on either side of the particle, but a pronoun normally goes in the middle. Inseparable patterns keep the complement after the whole unit. Check each verb rather than separating every multiword expression.

Why this pattern works

With a separable transitive particle verb, a noun object can often go on either side of the particle, but a pronoun normally goes in the middle. Inseparable patterns keep the complement after the whole unit. Check each verb rather than separating every multiword expression.
