A phrasal verb combines a verb with a particle. Its meaning may be idiomatic or literal, and its grammar must be learned with it.
A particle can change a verb's meaning or add a result or direction. Learn each combination with its sense and object pattern; one phrasal verb may have several meanings. Pick up can mean collect or learn, so context is essential.

Separable phrasal verbs: where does the object go?
With a separable phrasal verb, a noun object can often go in either position: Turn off the light or Turn the light off. A personal pronoun must go between the verb and particle: Turn it off, not Turn off it.
Separable phrasal verb-ൽ noun object രണ്ട് സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും വരാം. It, them പോലുള്ള pronoun വന്നാൽ verb-നും particle-നും ഇടയിൽ വേണം: Turn it off.
Learn the whole expression
Not every combination separates. Say look after the children and look after them; do not say look the children after. Some phrasal verbs need no object: “Please sit down.”
എല്ലാ verb combination-കളും വേർതിരിക്കാനാകില്ല. Look after them എന്നാണ് ശരി. ഓരോ പ്രയോഗവും അതിന്റെ അർത്ഥവും object pattern-ഉം ചേർത്ത് പഠിക്കുക.
One expression, different meanings
Pick up can mean collect (“I’ll pick you up at six”) or learn informally (“She picked up a few words”). Write down a full example for each meaning instead of memorising one Malayalam translation for every situation.
