Linking adverbs connect ideas in discourse but do not function as coordinating conjunctions. Separate independent clauses with appropriate punctuation.
However, therefore and meanwhile connect ideas without acting as ordinary coordinating conjunctions. Use a full stop or semicolon between complete clauses. A comma after a sentence-opening linker often helps the reader follow the relationship.
