Narratives combine past simple for events, past continuous for background and past perfect for earlier situations. Time relationships matter more than mechanically matching labels.
Tell the main events with past simple, set the background with past continuous, and look further back with past perfect when needed. Keep the chronology clear rather than changing every verb to the same tense.
