Linking verbs and complements – Malayalam Notes

Learn linking verbs and complements with English and Malayalam notes, natural examples, phrasal verbs and practice answers.

LESSON 063 · VERBS AND VERB PATTERNS

Understanding the topic · English notes

Linking verbs connect a subject with a complement. Adjectives describe the subject after seem, become, feel, taste and similar linking uses.

A linking verb connects the subject to a description, so use an adjective after a linking sense of feel, look, taste or seem. The same verb may have an action sense elsewhere. Looks tired describes a person; looks carefully describes an action.

Sentence pattern · പ്രയോഗരീതി

seem tired; become confident; taste good

Remember: Some linking verbs also have action uses that take adverbs.

Why this pattern works

A linking verb connects the subject to a description, so use an adjective after a linking sense of feel, look, taste or seem. The same verb may have an action sense elsewhere. Looks tired describes a person; looks carefully describes an action.

Look, feel തുടങ്ങിയവ subject-ന്റെ അവസ്ഥ വിവരിക്കുമ്പോൾ adjective വരും. പ്രവർത്തനമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോൾ adverb വരാം. Looks tired എന്നതും looks carefully എന്നതും വ്യത്യസ്ത അർത്ഥങ്ങളാണ്.
