Understanding the topic · English notes
The points to something identifiable from context, previous mention or shared knowledge. It also occurs in several conventional expressions.
Use the when the listener can identify which person or thing you mean. First mention often uses a/an; later mention may use the. Shared context can make something identifiable immediately, as in the kitchen light when both speakers know the kitchen.
