A clause normally has a subject and a verb. Main clauses can stand independently; subordinate clauses depend on another clause.
A main clause can make a complete statement. A clause introduced by because or when usually needs a main clause in formal writing. Locate the subject and verb in each part, then ask whether the clause gives a reason, time or other supporting information.

Remember: Imperatives can omit an understood subject; non-finite clauses may also lack an expressed subject.
