LESSON 233 · SPOKEN AND FORMAL GRAMMAR

Understanding the topic · English notes

Contractions combine grammatical words in writing to reflect ordinary speech. Use them according to register, and distinguish ambiguous forms through context.

Contractions are common in natural speech and informal writing. Context distinguishes she's meaning she is or she has, and I'd meaning I had or I would. Do not normally end an affirmative short answer with a contracted auxiliary: yes, I am, not yes, I'm.

Contractions സംസാരത്തിൽ സ്വാഭാവികമാണ്. She's = she is/she has; I'd = I had/I would എന്നത് തുടർന്ന് വരുന്ന രൂപം നോക്കി മനസ്സിലാക്കാം. Yes, I am എന്ന മറുപടിയെ Yes, I'm എന്ന് അവസാനിപ്പിക്കരുത്.
