LESSON 108 · QUESTIONS AND NEGATIVES
Understanding the topic · English notes
A common question tag uses the clause’s auxiliary, a pronoun subject and opposite polarity. Special and same-polarity tags also exist.
A standard checking tag repeats the auxiliary and uses a pronoun for the subject, often reversing positive/negative polarity. Without an auxiliary, use do/does/did. Special patterns include I'm…, aren't I? and let's…, shall we?; intonation affects the function.

Why this pattern works
A standard checking tag repeats the auxiliary and uses a pronoun for the subject, often reversing positive/negative polarity. Without an auxiliary, use do/does/did. Special patterns include I'm…, aren't I? and let's…, shall we?; intonation affects the function.
പ്രധാനവാക്യത്തിലെ auxiliary-യും subject-ന്റെ pronoun-ഉം tag-ൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുക. Positive വാക്യത്തിന് negative tag സാധാരണമാണ്. Auxiliary ഇല്ലെങ്കിൽ do/does/did. Let's-ന് shall we എന്ന പ്രത്യേക രൂപം വരും.
How to build a question tag
Use the statement’s auxiliary and a matching pronoun. A positive statement usually takes a negative tag; a negative statement usually takes a positive tag.
- She has turned up, hasn’t she?
- They haven’t called back, have they?
- You work here, don’t you?
- He left early, didn’t he?
Auxiliary ഇല്ലെങ്കിൽ tense അനുസരിച്ച് do, does, did ഉപയോഗിക്കാം.
Useful exceptions
I’m late, aren’t I? is the usual conversational form. Let’s start, shall we? uses shall we. A request may end with will you: “Close the door, will you?”
With rising intonation, the speaker often asks for information; with falling intonation, the speaker often expects agreement. Tone and context affect the meaning.
