A noun phrase contains a head noun with determiners and modifiers. Agreement usually follows the head, not a nearby modifier.
Find the head noun, then separate the words before and after it that add detail. In a box of old photographs, box is the head; photographs does not control the main verb. Determiners identify the noun, adjectives describe it, and following phrases can specify which one.
