A word class describes how a word behaves. The same word can belong to different classes in different sentences.
Start with the job a word does: a noun names, a verb expresses an action or state, and an adjective describes a noun. An adverb can describe how an action happens. A phrasal verb such as pick up works as a verb unit even though it contains two words.
