Unless normally means except if and often corresponds to if … not. It is not a mechanical replacement for every negative if-clause.
Unless often replaces if…not when it means except if. Avoid an extra negative that reverses your meaning. It does not fit every negative condition, especially when the intended hypothetical or known-fact relationship changes.
