LESSON 189 · CONDITIONALS AND HYPOTHETICAL MEANING

Understanding the topic · English notes

Second conditionals present remote, imagined or contrary-to-fact present/future situations. A past form marks remoteness, not necessarily past time.

The past form marks a remote or imagined present/future situation, not necessarily past time. Use would/could/might + base verb in the result. Were is common for hypothetical be, particularly in formal contexts and if I were you.

ഇപ്പോഴോ ഭാവിയിലോ സങ്കൽപ്പിക്കുന്ന അകന്ന സാധ്യതയ്ക്ക് past രൂപം വരാം.

Second conditional-ലെ past രൂപം കഴിഞ്ഞസമയം എന്നല്ല; സങ്കൽപ്പമോ അകന്ന സാധ്യതയോ ആണ്. Result-ൽ would/could/might + base verb. If I were you ഉപദേശം പറയാൻ സാധാരണമാണ്.

Why this pattern works

The past form marks a remote or imagined present/future situation, not necessarily past time. Use would/could/might + base verb in the result. Were is common for hypothetical be, particularly in formal contexts and if I were you.

Second conditional-ലെ past രൂപം കഴിഞ്ഞസമയം എന്നല്ല; സങ്കൽപ്പമോ അകന്ന സാധ്യതയോ ആണ്. Result-ൽ would/could/might + base verb. If I were you ഉപദേശം പറയാൻ സാധാരണമാണ്.
