An it-cleft splits a message to focus one element. The relative-like clause carries information treated as already relevant in the conversation.
An it-cleft focuses one part of a message: It was Maya who called. The remainder is treated as already relevant. You can focus a person, time or other constituent, but preserve the original event's meaning and verb agreement.
