ഒരു സുഹൃത്ത് “Where are you?” എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചാൽ “I’m in the bus” ആണോ “I’m on the bus” ആണോ പറയേണ്ടത്? യാത്രക്കാരനായി bus ൽ പോകുകയാണ് എന്ന സാധാരണ സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ “I’m on the bus” എന്നാണ്. Place prepositions മലയാളത്തിലെ “ഇൽ” എന്ന ഒരേയൊരു രൂപവുമായി എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും ഒത്തുപോകില്ല.

“The keys are in my bag.” — താക്കോലുകൾ എന്റെ ബാഗിനുള്ളിലാണ്. “She is in the kitchen.” — അവൾ അടുക്കളയിലാണ്. “We live in Kerala.” — ഞങ്ങൾ കേരളത്തിലാണ് താമസിക്കുന്നത്. Room, bag, city, country എന്നിവയെ ഒരു space അല്ലെങ്കിൽ area ആയി കാണുമ്പോൾ in ഉപയോഗിക്കാം.
“He works in Kochi” ഏത് നഗരത്തിലാണ് ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നത് എന്ന് പറയുന്നു. “He is in the office” office നുള്ളിലാണെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കാം. പക്ഷേ ഒരു സ്ഥലം കണ്ടാൽ in മാത്രം ഉപയോഗിക്കണമെന്നില്ല; നിങ്ങൾ എന്താണ് ഊന്നിപ്പറയുന്നത് എന്നും നോക്കണം.
On: ഒരു surface ൽ
“Your phone is on the table.” — നിങ്ങളുടെ ഫോൺ മേശപ്പുറത്താണ്. “There is a picture on the wall.” — ചുമരിൽ ഒരു ചിത്രമുണ്ട്. “The notice is on the door.” — door ൽ notice പതിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. Surface horizontal ആയിരിക്കണം എന്നില്ല; wall ഉം door ഉം surfaces ആണ്.
“My room is on the second floor” — എന്റെ മുറി രണ്ടാം നിലയിലാണ്. Floor പറയുമ്പോൾ on ഉപയോഗിക്കാം. എന്നാൽ “There is water on the floor” നിലത്തിന്റെ surface ലാണ് വെള്ളമെന്ന് പറയുന്നു. Context അനുസരിച്ച് floor ന്റെ meaning മാറുന്നു.
At: ഒരു location അല്ലെങ്കിൽ activity point ആയി
“I’ll meet you at the bus stop.” — bus stop ൽ കാണാം. “She is at reception.” — അവൾ reception ൽ ഉണ്ട്. “I’m at home.” — ഞാൻ വീട്ടിലാണ്. At ഒരു സ്ഥലത്തെ location ആയി പറയാം; വ്യക്തി കെട്ടിടത്തിന്റെ ഏത് മുറിയിലാണ് എന്ന് നിർബന്ധമായി വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നില്ല.
“I’m at the office” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ ജോലിസ്ഥലത്താണ് എന്ന പൊതുവായ വിവരം നൽകാം. “I’m in the office, not outside” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ അകത്താണെന്നതിന് ഊന്നൽ നൽകുന്നു. അതിനാൽ at the office, in the office എന്നിവ രണ്ടും context അനുസരിച്ച് ശരിയാകാം.
Bus, train, car: phrases ആയി പരിശീലിക്കൂ
യാത്രക്കാരനായി “on a bus”, “on a train”, “on a plane” എന്നിവ സാധാരണമാണ്. “In a car”, “in a taxi” എന്നിവയും സാധാരണമാണ്. “I’m on the bus now. I’ll call you later.” — ഇപ്പോൾ bus ൽ ആണ്; പിന്നീട് വിളിക്കാം. “My bag is in the car.” — എന്റെ ബാഗ് കാറിനുള്ളിലാണ്.
യാത്രാമാർഗം മാത്രം പറയുമ്പോൾ “I travel by bus” എന്ന് പറയാം. By bus ഉം on the bus ഉം ഒരേ sentence pattern അല്ല. കയറുക എന്ന action പറയുമ്പോൾ “get on the bus”, “get into the car” എന്ന phrases പരിശീലിക്കാം.
Address ഉം meeting point ഉം
ഒരു full street address നൊപ്പം at ഉപയോഗിക്കാം: “The office is at 24 Park Road.” ഇത് ഒരു practice address ആണ്. Street name നൊപ്പം British English ൽ in ഉം American English ൽ on ഉം കാണാം. Beginner conversation ൽ door, gate, reception പോലുള്ള വ്യക്തമായ meeting point പറയുന്നത് കൂടുതൽ സഹായകരമാണ്.
“I’m at the school gate” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ കാത്തുനിൽക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലം വ്യക്തമാകും. “I’m in the school” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ building അല്ലെങ്കിൽ campus നുള്ളിലാണെന്ന് അർത്ഥമാകാം. Malayalam translation മാത്രം ആശ്രയിക്കാതെ ഈ സാഹചര്യങ്ങൾ സങ്കൽപ്പിച്ച് പറയൂ.
