Spoken English practice can begin with conversations you already have at home, at shops and at your child’s school. You do not need a complicated speech. Choose a few useful sentences and say them while you do the activity. This guide gives Malayalam meanings, a short conversation and a repeatable practice routine for homemakers.
Talking about your day
- I am making breakfast. —
- I need to buy some vegetables. —
- I will call you later. —
- Could you help me, please? —
- I have finished my work.
Use “I am” for something happening now: “I am making tea.” Use “I will” for a future action: “I will make tea later.” Change the action to create sentences from your own day.
At a shop
- How much does this cost? —
- Do you have a smaller size? —
- I would like one kilo of tomatoes. —
- Can I pay by card? —
- Could I have a receipt, please? —
Speaking with a teacher
- How is my child doing in class? —
- Is there any homework today? —
- What should we practise at home? —
- Could you explain that again, please? —
- Thank you for your help. —
A short practice conversation
Customer: Good morning. I would like one kilo of tomatoes.
Shopkeeper: Certainly. Would you like anything else?
Customer: Yes, some onions, please. How much does everything cost?
Shopkeeper: It comes to one hundred rupees.
Customer: Can I pay by card?
This is a practice example, so the amount is only part of the dialogue. Read both roles aloud. Then change the items, quantity and payment question to match a real shopping trip.
A ten-minute daily routine
- Two minutes: Choose three sentences and understand their meanings.
- Three minutes: Say each sentence slowly, then repeat it without reading.
- Three minutes: Use the sentences in a short conversation with a family member or practise both roles yourself.
- Two minutes: Record yourself and listen. Choose one sentence to improve tomorrow.
When you cannot find a word
Keep a few helpful phrases ready: “Please give me a moment,” “I mean…” and “Could you say that more slowly?” A pause is normal. Finish a simple sentence before trying to add more detail.
Common questions
Can a beginner use these sentences?
Yes. Start with two or three sentences and familiar situations. Use the Malayalam meanings to understand them, then practise saying the English sentence as a whole.
How soon will I become fluent?
There is no fixed timeline. Your starting level, practice and feedback matter. Track small improvements, such as asking a question or describing your day more clearly.
