Clear classroom English helps teachers give instructions, check understanding and encourage students. Start with short phrases that match actions you use every day. The Malayalam meanings below explain the purpose of each sentence; practise the English aloud instead of translating word by word.
Starting the lesson
- Good morning, everyone. — എല്ലാവർക്കും സുപ്രഭാതം.
- Are you ready to begin? — തുടങ്ങാൻ തയ്യാറാണോ?
- Please open your books. — ദയവായി പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ തുറക്കൂ.
- Turn to page ten. — പത്താം പേജ് തുറക്കൂ.
- Let’s revise yesterday’s lesson. — ഇന്നലത്തെ പാഠം വീണ്ടും നോക്കാം.
Giving clear instructions
- Listen carefully. — ശ്രദ്ധിച്ച് കേൾക്കൂ.
- Look at the board. — ബോർഡിലേക്ക് നോക്കൂ.
- Read the sentence aloud. — വാക്യം ഉറക്കെ വായിക്കൂ.
- Work in pairs. — രണ്ട് പേരായി ചേർന്ന് പ്രവർത്തിക്കൂ.
- Raise your hand if you know the answer. — ഉത്തരം അറിയാമെങ്കിൽ കൈ ഉയർത്തൂ.
Give one instruction at a time. For example, say “Open your books,” pause, then say “Turn to page ten.” A short pause gives learners time to follow the action.
Checking understanding
- Do you understand? — നിങ്ങൾക്ക് മനസ്സിലായോ?
- Would you like me to explain it again? — ഞാൻ വീണ്ടും വിശദീകരിക്കണോ?
- Can you give an example? — ഒരു ഉദാഹരണം പറയാമോ?
- What does this word mean? — ഈ വാക്കിന്റെ അർത്ഥം എന്താണ്?
- Does anyone have a question? — ആർക്കെങ്കിലും ചോദ്യം ഉണ്ടോ?
Students may say “yes” even when they are unsure. Follow a general question with a small task: ask a learner to give an example, explain an idea in their own words or complete one sentence.
Encouraging students and ending the lesson
- Good effort. Try once more. — നല്ല ശ്രമം. ഒരിക്കൽ കൂടി ശ്രമിക്കൂ.
- Take your time. — സമയമെടുത്ത് ചെയ്യൂ.
- It’s okay to make mistakes. — തെറ്റുകൾ വരുന്നതിൽ കുഴപ്പമില്ല.
- Please complete this for homework. — ഇത് വീട്ടുപാഠമായി പൂർത്തിയാക്കൂ.
- We will continue this tomorrow. — ഇത് നാളെ തുടരും.
A five-minute speaking practice
- Choose five phrases that fit tomorrow’s lesson.
- Read each phrase slowly, then say it while doing the action.
- Record a short practice lesson on your phone.
- Listen for clarity and natural pauses. Focus on one improvement at a time.
- Use the phrases in class and add a few new ones when they feel comfortable.
For a model exchange, say: “Please open your books. Read the sentence aloud. Can you give an example? Good effort. Try once more.” Practise the whole sequence so that the phrases become part of a real lesson.
Common questions
Should teachers use only English?
Choose language that helps students understand the lesson. You can explain a difficult point in Malayalam, then return to a short English instruction and demonstrate it.
How can I sound more confident?
Use familiar sentences, speak at a comfortable pace and pause between instructions. Repeated practice is more useful than memorising many phrases without using them.
