Misplaced and dangling modifiers – Malayalam Notes

Learn misplaced and dangling modifiers with English and Malayalam notes, natural examples, phrasal verbs and practice answers.

LESSON 231 · PUNCTUATION AND EDITING

Understanding the topic · English notes

Place modifiers near the words they describe. An opening participle clause normally shares its subject with the main clause; otherwise the sentence can dangle.

Put a modifier near the word it describes. An introductory participle clause normally attaches to the main subject, so a person must be the subject when a person performs the opening action. Use a full clause when that relationship is difficult to express clearly.

Sentence pattern ·

Walking home, Anu saw the river.

Remember: Rewrite rather than relying on the reader to infer an absent actor.

Why this pattern works

Put a modifier near the word it describes. An introductory participle clause normally attaches to the main subject, so a person must be the subject when a person performs the opening action. Use a full clause when that relationship is difficult to express clearly.
