ട്രെയിൻ എപ്പോഴാണ് പുറപ്പെടുന്നത് എന്ന് ഒരാൾ നിങ്ങളോട് ചോദിച്ചു. അത് സുഹൃത്തിനോട് പറയുമ്പോൾ “She asked when the train left” എന്ന് പറയാം. ഇവിടെ “when did the train leave” എന്ന direct question അതേ ക്രമത്തിൽ തുടരില്ല. “Where do you work?” → “She asked me where I worked.” — ഞാൻ എവിടെയാണ് ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നതെന്ന് അവൾ ചോദിച്ചു. Where കഴിഞ്ഞ് I, പിന്നെ worked. “She asked me where did I work” എന്നതിൽ direct question ന്റെ did അനാവശ്യമായി തുടരുന്നു.
“What are you doing?” → “He asked me what I was doing.” — ഞാൻ എന്ത് ചെയ്യുകയാണെന്ന് അവൻ ചോദിച്ചു. Was I എന്നതിനു പകരം I was ശ്രദ്ധിക്കൂ. “Who called you?” → “He asked who had called me.” Who തന്നെ subject ആകുമ്പോൾ അതിന് ശേഷം മറ്റൊരു subject ചേർക്കേണ്ടതില്ല.

“Are you free?” → “She asked if I was free.” — എനിക്ക് ഒഴിവുണ്ടോ എന്ന് അവൾ ചോദിച്ചു. “Did you send the file?” → “He asked whether I had sent the file.” — ഞാൻ ഫയൽ അയച്ചോ എന്ന് അവൻ ചോദിച്ചു. Direct question ൽ where, what പോലുള്ള word ഇല്ലെങ്കിൽ if അല്ലെങ്കിൽ whether ഉപയോഗിക്കാം. “He asked that I had sent the file” ഈ meaning നൽകില്ല.

Teacher അനിതയോട് “Can you bring your notebook tomorrow?” എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചു. മറ്റൊരാൾ പിന്നീട് റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ “The teacher asked Anita if she could bring her notebook the next day” എന്ന് പറയാം. You → she, your → her. Tomorrow ഏത് ദിവസമാണെന്ന് സന്ദർഭത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കുക.
“Could you close the door?” പോലുള്ള polite request റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ഉദ്ദേശ്യം കൂടി നോക്കണം. “She asked me to close the door” എന്നത് വാതിൽ അടയ്ക്കാൻ അവൾ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു എന്നാണ്. ഒരാളുടെ കഴിവിനെപ്പറ്റി ചോദിച്ച yes-no question പോലെ അതിനെ എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യേണ്ടതില്ല.

“She asked where the office was.” ഇത് ഒരു statement ആണ്. അതിനാൽ full stop. “Did she ask where the office was?” എന്ന വാക്യം മുഴുവൻ ചോദ്യം ആയതിനാൽ question mark വേണം. ഉള്ളിലെ ഭാഗം രണ്ടിലും “where the office was” എന്ന ക്രമത്തിൽ തന്നെയാണ്.
