അനു നിങ്ങളോട് “I’m working from home today” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. അത് മറ്റൊരാളോട് പറയുമ്പോൾ ആരാണ് വീട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നത് എന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കണം. “Anu said she was working from home that day” എന്ന് റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യാം. ഒരാളുടെ വാക്കുകൾ അതേപടി ഉദ്ധരിക്കാതെ ഉള്ളടക്കം കൈമാറുന്നതാണ് ഇവിടെ പഠിക്കുന്ന reported speech.
Said ഉം told ഉം
“Anu said that she was busy.” — തിരക്കിലാണെന്ന് അനു പറഞ്ഞു. “Anu told me that she was busy.” — തിരക്കിലാണെന്ന് അനു എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞു. Told ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഈ pattern ൽ ആർക്കാണ് പറഞ്ഞത് എന്ന് me, us, him, her തുടങ്ങിയവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് സൂചിപ്പിക്കണം. Said നൊപ്പം ആ വ്യക്തിയെ ചേർക്കണമെങ്കിൽ “Anu said to me…” എന്ന് പറയാം. “Anu said me…” ഒഴിവാക്കൂ.
That ഉപയോഗിച്ചാലും ഒഴിവാക്കിയാലും ഈ examples സാധാരണ ശരിയാണ്. “He said he needed help” എന്നത് സംഭാഷണത്തിൽ സ്വാഭാവികമാണ്.

Direct speech. Meera said, “I left my notebook at home.” Reported statement. “Meera said she had left her notebook at home.” ഇവിടെ I → she, my → her. I എന്ന വാക്ക് കണ്ടാൽ എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും she ആക്കേണ്ട. നിങ്ങൾ നിങ്ങളുടെ തന്നെ പഴയ വാക്കുകൾ റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുകയാണെങ്കിൽ “I said I was tired” എന്നത് ശരിയാണ്.
Tense എപ്പോൾ പിന്നോട്ടു മാറും?
Past reporting verb ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോൾ പലപ്പോഴും present → past, will → would, can → could എന്നീ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ കാണാം. “I need a pen” → “He said he needed a pen.” “I’ll call you” → “She said she would call me.” “I can come” → “He said he could come.” ഇവയിൽ reporting context നോക്കിയാണ് pronouns തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നത്.
വിവരം ഇപ്പോഴും ശരിയാണെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാണെങ്കിൽ tense മാറ്റാതെ പറയാനും സാധിക്കും. ഉദാഹരണത്തിന്, അനു ഇപ്പോഴും കൊച്ചിയിൽ താമസിക്കുന്നു എന്ന് അറിയാമെങ്കിൽ “Anu said she lives in Kochi” സ്വാഭാവികമാണ്. “Anu said she lived in Kochi” എന്ന രൂപവും context അനുസരിച്ച് ശരിയാണ്. Past form കണ്ടതുകൊണ്ട് അനു അവിടെ നിന്ന് മാറിയെന്ന് തീർച്ചപ്പെടുത്തേണ്ട.
