“I need an information” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടോ? മലയാളത്തിൽ “ഒരു വിവരം” എന്ന് സ്വാഭാവികമായി പറയാം. പക്ഷേ English ൽ information സാധാരണ uncountable ആണ്. “I need some information” അല്ലെങ്കിൽ “I need a piece of information” എന്ന് പറയാം. Countability പഠിക്കുമ്പോൾ മലയാളത്തിലെ എണ്ണൽരീതി എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും English ൽ അതേപടി വരില്ലെന്ന് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കണം.
Countable nouns: singular ഉം plural ഉം
A chair → two chairs; a student → three students; an idea → several ideas. ഇവയുടെ singular, plural രൂപങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് എണ്ണം പറയാം. “There are four chairs in the room.” — മുറിയിൽ നാല് കസേരകളുണ്ട്. “I have an idea.” — എനിക്ക് ഒരു ആശയമുണ്ട്.
സാധാരണ singular countable noun ന് a/an, the, my, this പോലുള്ള ഒരു determiner വേണം. “I bought a notebook” എന്ന് പറയൂ; “I bought notebook” എന്നല്ല. Plural general meaning ൽ “Notebooks are useful” എന്ന് article ഇല്ലാതെയും പറയാം.
Uncountable nouns: substance, idea അല്ലെങ്കിൽ collection ആയി
Water, rice, information, advice, furniture, equipment, luggage എന്നിവ സാധാരണ uncountable uses ഉള്ളവയാണ്. “The information is useful.” — ആ വിവരം ഉപകാരപ്രദമാണ്. “My luggage is heavy.” — എന്റെ luggage ന് ഭാരം കൂടുതലാണ്. ഈ meanings ൽ singular verb ഉപയോഗിക്കൂ; “The informations are useful” എന്ന രൂപം ഒഴിവാക്കുക.
Uncountable എന്നത് യഥാർത്ഥ ജീവിതത്തിൽ അളക്കാനാവില്ല എന്നല്ല. Rice തൂക്കാം, water അളക്കാം, furniture ന്റെ items എണ്ണാം. English ൽ ആ noun എങ്ങനെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു എന്നാണ് ഇവിടെ ചോദ്യം.
Units ഉപയോഗിച്ച് എണ്ണം പറയൂ
A glass of water — ഒരു glass വെള്ളം; two bags of rice — രണ്ട് bags അരി; three pieces of furniture — മൂന്ന് furniture items; a piece of advice — ഒരു ഉപദേശം. “We bought two chairs and a table” എന്നും പറയാം. Collection word ന് പകരം countable item name ഉപയോഗിച്ചാൽ കൃത്യമായി വിവരിക്കാം.
Travel example: “I have two suitcases” suitcases ന്റെ എണ്ണം പറയുന്നു. “I have a lot of luggage” മൊത്തം luggage നെ പറയുന്നു. “Two luggages” എന്നതിന് പകരം “two bags”, “two suitcases” അല്ലെങ്കിൽ “two pieces of luggage” തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാം.
Advice, information, equipment: സാധാരണ corrections
“She gave me useful advice.” — അവൾ എനിക്ക് ഉപകാരപ്രദമായ ഉപദേശം നൽകി. “Could you send me the information?” — വിവരങ്ങൾ അയച്ചുതരാമോ? “The equipment is ready.” — ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ തയ്യാറാണ്. ഈ standard uses ൽ advices, informations, equipments എന്ന plurals ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടതില്ല.
ഒരു correction പറഞ്ഞശേഷം പുതിയ സാഹചര്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കൂ: “I need some information about the course.” “We need more equipment for the activity.” പഠിച്ച phrase നിങ്ങളുടെ വീട്ടിലോ ജോലിയിലോ ഉപയോഗിക്കാവുന്നതാകുമ്പോൾ ഓർക്കാൻ എളുപ്പമാകും.
ഒരേ word ന് countable, uncountable meanings ഉണ്ടാകാം
“There is some glass on the floor” എന്നത് തകർന്ന glass material നെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാം. “There are two glasses on the table” കുടിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന രണ്ട് glasses ആണ്. “I need some paper” material ആണ്; “I read a paper about language learning” ഒരു article അല്ലെങ്കിൽ research paper ആകാം.
“Two coffees, please” cafe യിൽ രണ്ട് cups അല്ലെങ്കിൽ servings of coffee എന്ന shorthand ആണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് coffee എല്ലായിടത്തും countable ആണെന്നോ “a coffee” എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും തെറ്റാണെന്നോ കരുതരുത്. Meaning മാറുമ്പോൾ noun ന്റെ usage മാറാം.

ഒരു word പുതിയതാണെങ്കിൽ learner’s dictionary ൽ C, U, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ C/U എന്ന labels നോക്കാം. Example sentence കൂടി വായിക്കൂ. പട്ടിക മാത്രം മനഃപാഠമാക്കുന്നതിന് പകരം “some advice”, “a useful idea”, “two pieces of luggage” എന്നിങ്ങനെ phrases സൂക്ഷിക്കുക.

Answers: 1. some advice; 2. is; 3. suitcases; 4. a bottle of water; 5. ideas. ഇനി നിങ്ങളുടെ വീട്ടിലെ രണ്ട് countable objects ഉം ഒരു uncountable noun ഉം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് മൂന്ന് sentences ഉണ്ടാക്കൂ.
