“I am teacher” എന്ന് പറയുമ്പോൾ എന്തോ കുറവുണ്ടെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നുണ്ടോ? Standard English ൽ “I am a teacher” എന്നാണ്. മലയാളത്തിൽ അതേ സ്ഥാനത്ത് ഒരു പ്രത്യേക വാക്ക് വേണ്ടിവരാത്തതിനാൽ English articles വിട്ടുപോകാൻ എളുപ്പമാണ്. A, an, the എന്താണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത് എന്ന് ചെറിയ examples വഴി നോക്കാം.
A അല്ലെങ്കിൽ an: ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒരൊന്ന്
“I need a pen.” — എനിക്ക് ഒരു pen വേണം. ഏത് pen ആണെന്ന് പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് പറഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല. “She bought a bag.” — അവൾ ഒരു bag വാങ്ങി. A/an സാധാരണ singular countable noun നൊപ്പം വരും. Pen എണ്ണാം: one pen, two pens. അതുകൊണ്ട് a pen പറയാം.
ഒരു profession പറയുമ്പോഴും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കൂ: “He is a driver.” “She is an engineer.” Plural ആക്കുമ്പോൾ “They are teachers” എന്നാണ്; “They are a teachers” എന്നല്ല.
A ആണോ an ആണോ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നത് sound ആണ്
“An apple”, “an umbrella”, “an hour” എന്ന് പറയാം. Hour ൽ h ശബ്ദമില്ല; തുടക്കം vowel sound ആണ്. “A university”, “a useful idea” എന്ന് പറയാം. University, useful എന്നിവയുടെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ /y/ പോലുള്ള consonant sound ആണ്.
അടുത്തതായി കേൾക്കുന്ന sound നോക്കണം: “a book” പക്ഷേ “an interesting book.” ഇവിടെ article ന് തൊട്ടുപിന്നിൽ interesting വരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് an ആണ്. Spelling ൽ a, e, i, o, u കണ്ടാൽ എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും an എന്ന shortcut മതിയാകില്ല.
The: ഏതാണ് എന്ന് രണ്ടുപേർക്കും വ്യക്തമായാൽ
“I saw a dog near our house. The dog was sleeping.” — വീടിനടുത്ത് ഒരു നായയെ കണ്ടു. ആ നായ ഉറങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നു. ആദ്യ mention ൽ a dog; അടുത്ത sentence ൽ അതേ dog നെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ the dog.
മുമ്പ് പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കണം എന്ന നിർബന്ധമില്ല. “Please close the door” എന്ന് ഒരേ മുറിയിലുള്ളവർക്ക് പറഞ്ഞാൽ ഏത് door ആണെന്ന് context ൽ നിന്ന് വ്യക്തമായേക്കാം. “The book on the table is mine” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ table ൽ ഉള്ള പ്രത്യേക book ആണ്.
The singular നൊപ്പം മാത്രമല്ല
“The children are outside” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ കേൾക്കുന്നയാൾക്ക് അറിയാവുന്ന കുട്ടികളെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാം. “The water in this bottle is cold” പ്രത്യേക bottle ലെ വെള്ളമാണ്. അതിനാൽ the singular countable nouns നൊപ്പം മാത്രം ഉപയോഗിക്കാനുള്ള article അല്ല.
“I need water” പൊതുവായി വെള്ളം ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്നു. “I need the water you brought” നിങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന പ്രത്യേക വെള്ളത്തെക്കുറിച്ചാണ്. “A water” എന്നതിന് പകരം beginner practice ൽ “a glass of water” അല്ലെങ്കിൽ “a bottle of water” തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാം.
Possessive ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ article രണ്ടാമതായി ചേർക്കരുത്
“My teacher is here” എന്ന് പറയൂ; “the my teacher” എന്നല്ല. “This book is useful” ശരിയാണ്; “a this book” എന്നല്ല. A/an/the, my, this എന്നിവയെ ഒരേ noun ന് മുമ്പ് സാധാരണ ഇങ്ങനെ കൂട്ടിവയ്ക്കാനാകില്ല.

A: “I’m looking for a bag.” B: “Do you like the blue bag?” A: “Yes. Does it have an inside pocket?” ആദ്യ request ൽ ഏതെങ്കിലും bag; തുടർന്ന് കാണിച്ചുകൊടുത്ത blue bag; അവസാനത്തിൽ inside എന്ന vowel sound ന് മുമ്പ് an. നിങ്ങളുടെ ആവശ്യത്തിന് bag മാറ്റി notebook അല്ലെങ്കിൽ umbrella ഉപയോഗിക്കാം.
