English clause patterns depend on the verb: some need no object, some need objects, and linking verbs take complements.
Match the pattern to the verb instead of adding an object to every sentence. Wake up can stand without an object; turn off needs the thing being switched off. Linking verbs such as be need a complement in ordinary complete descriptions, not an action-receiving object.
